SOUND PUFF
2023
Prototype for wearable meditation.
Inspired by Vancouver's bustling and exposed Cambie Bridge, SOUND PUFF tests the abilities of upcycled materials for sensory regulation.
Context: School Project
Duration: 1 Month
Feature Materials: Upcycled Yoga Mat, Felt
The Story
On a crisp day in October, I was walking across Cambie Bridge. The moody light and clear views were striking, urging me to linger and observe, but the damp winds and rush of cars cut my time short.
I began to think about meditative acts. We use meditation to turn inward and find balanced awareness. And it is traditionally limited to a calm, static space.
So what if I designed a tool to bring meditation, and the power of silence, on the go? What new beauty might unfold in the most hectic places, if one could just look?
Research
It began with a long walk across Cambie Bridge taking photographs and sketching observations.
Once I developed a connection with the space I was able to design from a place of presence, and I chose sensory deprivation as my outcome.
Using a mood board I threaded my observations with current fashion trends—puffer jackets and wellness lifestyle—and my own aesthetic goals—vintage blocky colours and cozy quilts.
Prototyping
The bulk of prototyping was spent testing various combinations of upcycled materials, for the essential warmth and sound dampening
Testing in situ, a combination of yoga mat, and felt, performed best.
I chose a simple bonnet silhouette as it would easily tighten to enhance sensory effects.
Resolution + Make
A patchwork technique worked well for integrating the materials and the bold aesthetic.
However, due to the intricate material layering, there was a tedious hand-sewing process. In a future iteration, I would reimagine this assembly process.
Another challenge arose when a final wool layer made the hat sit too high on the head. I resolved this by adding a double drawstring for easy user adjustment.
I deeply enjoyed the research and experimental nature of this design journey, as well as being able to explore some sustainable reuse methods. In future, I want to continue to push SOUNDPUFF into more practical spaces. For example, considering different materials for different climates or sensory preferences.
